Dr Liyanage is a Board-Certified Surgeon with Fellowships from the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).

Dr Liyanage trained at the Canberra Hospital and worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney as Senior Fellow. He was a General Surgeon in Alice Springs from 2015 to 2017 and has been a conjoint Senior Lecturer in Sri Lanka and University of Sydney, Australia. He was a highly reputed and skilled HPB/Transplant Surgeon at the North Colombo Teaching Hospital from 2011 to 2015. Dr Liyanage is a Senior VMO at the Dubbo Base Hospital, and a VMO at Dubbo Private Hospital. He is the Lead Surgeon of Macquarie Weight Loss and Surgical Services. Dr Liyanage and his local team offers full care for weight loss patients in Western NSW.
