Dr James Coolican is a specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon living and working in the town of Dubbo and is a part of the Western Plains Orthopaedic Group.

After completion of his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 2012 and participating in the regional preferential recruitment program for internship at Port Macquarie, James then proceeded with orthopaedic surgery speciality training with the Australian Orthopaedic Association as well as a Masters of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Sydney.

James completed orthopaedic surgical training on the NSW Northside rotation in 2022 including rotations in the Central West at Dubbo and Orange as well as Nepean, Central Coast, Northern Beaches, Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore Hospital and Westmead Children’s Hospitals and then went onto complete renowned international fellowships within knee surgery at the Oxford University Health trust and Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit and in hip surgery with the Exeter Hip Unit in the United Kingdom at the Royal Devon and Exeter trust.

James has experience in bony, ligament and tendon orthopaedic trauma as well as hip and knee sub-specialty areas including partial and total joint knee replacement, hip replacement, revision joint replacement surgery, soft tissue and sports knee injuries. In particular, James is a firm believer in the advantages of partial knee replacement over total knee replacement in the right patient and has completed robotic joint replacement training for both hips and knees during his fellowship time in Exeter.

He is passionate about regional healthcare, consulting and performing surgeries at Dubbo Private and Dubbo Base Hospitals.
